What Is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any issue that requires prompt treatment to relieve severe pain or infection, stop bleeding, or save a tooth. Common dental emergencies we see at Nanaimo Smiles include:

  • Toothaches: Often a sign of underlying issues like cavities or infections, ranging from mild to severe pain.
  • Knocked-Out Tooth: Requires immediate care, whether from an accident or sports.
  • Chipped or Broken Tooth: May not hurt right away but can lead to serious problems if ignored.
  • Abscessed Tooth: Causes severe pain from infection and needs prompt treatment.
  • Lost Filling or Crown: Though less urgent, it exposes your tooth to potential damage and decay.

If you are unsure if you’re experiencing a dental emergency, do not hesitate to contact our team. We will do our best to provide swift support to help ease your discomfort.

How can I help manage my dental emergency?

After you have contacted a professional, you can manage your dental emergency in the following ways:

Toothaches: Rinse your mouth with warm water and use dental floss to remove any trapped food. To alleviate discomfort, take over-the-counter pain medication or apply a warm or cool compress to the affected area.

Knocked-Out Tooth: If you’ve knocked out a tooth, it may still be saved! Rinse the tooth with water, avoiding contact with the root. If possible, place it back in the socket or store it in saline.

Chipped or Broken Tooth: Rinse your mouth and any broken pieces with warm water. If there’s bleeding, apply gauze until it stops.

Abscessed Tooth: Rinse your mouth several times a day with a mild saltwater solution (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water).

Lost Filling or Crown: Gently keep the area as clean as possible until you can seek dental care.

Should I go to the emergency room for my dental emergency?

If you are experiencing heavy bleeding, are having trouble breathing or swallowing, or suspect you may have a broken bone, go to the emergency room or call 911.

What should I expect during an emergency dental service?

During your emergency dental visit, the first step is to carefully assess your condition by reviewing your medical history and conducting a thorough clinical examination. Our team may use X-rays to get a precise diagnosis of the issue. Our primary goal is to alleviate your pain, address any urgent concerns, and stabilize the situation. Depending on your specific needs, it might be necessary to perform temporary treatments such as filling a cavity, reattaching a tooth, or draining an abscess. We will also outline a follow-up plan to ensure comprehensive treatment and long-term care. We’ll discuss strategies for managing pain and provide you with clear instructions for at-home care to support your recovery.

What are some over-the-counter medications that are safe to take before I see a dentist?

Over-the-counter medications can help manage dental pain temporarily. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) can relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Additionally, numbing gels containing benzocaine can provide localized relief for toothaches. Applying a cold compress to the affected area can also help reduce swelling and numb the pain.
